What would you like your character's tag to be?: Percy Jackson
Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present):
Forget what you knew about history. The Greek Gods didn’t vanish a couple of thousand years ago. They still exist and Mount Olympus was last seen at the top of the Empire State Building. Over the years the gods have been busy medling in human affairs and creating demigods (half god half mortal). Children of Hades, Zeus and Poesidon are the most powerful, and three of them were responsible for World War Two. Post World War Two the three of the swore in sire no more heroes. Being gods…they slipped up.
Percy Jackson, son of Poesidon was one of these slip ups. Before he turned twelve he had no idea what he was, he was diagnosed ADHD (battle awareness) and dyslexia (hard wired for Greek) and had been kicked out of four different schools. His father acknowledged him when he turned twelve because he needed him to find Zeus bolt and prevent a war between the gods.
He was brought to Camp Halfblood, the training grounds and summer camp for Greek Heroes and sent on a quest to retrieve the bolt. Even though he was successful, Percy’s life didn’t exactly become easy. Kronos, father of the Olympians was rising and planned to overthrow them. And of course the gods were leaving it to their children to deal with the problem.
Most gods didn’t claim their children and they remained undetermined, chased by monsters and waiting for some sign of who they belonged to. It made them angry and Kronos was able to recruit many of them to his side. This included Luke, a son of Hermes who wanted revenge against his father. Manipulated, Luke betrayed the Camp and only at the end, in the final battle did he see what had happened, did he defy Kronos. It cost him his life.
Percy vowed to make sure no other demigod would suffer the same fate. Because he was the leader of the demigods who defeated Kronos, the gods offered him immorality (the highest honour). He declined it and asked that demigods would be claimed by their parents as his reward.
Alls well that ends well, right?
Unfortunately gods and demigods have more enemies, even more powerful ones, like Gaia, the earth herself. Percy had one happy summer before Gaia began to wake up and kidnapped Hera to stat a war amongst the gods.
Hera being Hera, used demigods to free her. She was the goddess of marriage and hated them a and saw them as pawns. She wiped Percy’s mind and sent him to another camp, a Roman one, to unite demigods. Gods have Greek and Roman forms and have kids in their different forms. Both camps were kept separate but to defeat Gaia they needed to come together.
Percy led a Roman contingent in a battle to free death. As he went along, he regained his memories and gained the Romans trust. Of course nothing goes smoothly, when the Greeks caught up with the Romans, ghosts sew discord. Seven demigods made it away to strike against Gaia but the rest were left ready, poised for war against each other, rather than against their common enemy Gaia and their forces.
Percy and the other six had no choice but to continue with their quest. If they returned to help their camps, Gaia would conquer all. Their quest lead them to Rome to reclaim the statue of Athena to unite the camps. After that they planned to strike for Greece.
Planned.
Annabeth was dragged down to Tartarus by a vengeful spider. Percy refused to leave her and fell with her. The journey affected them deeply. Percy was faced by his greatest fears, cursed for all the people he had been left behind. He reached the point of no hope and was rescued by a Titan and a giant who helped him and Annabeth to leave.
The Titan Bob, only wanted to see the stars, but he believd in Percy and stayed so they could leave. Percy carries this burden with him.
Character's personality:
Percy in a natural leader, in battle such as the Battle for Olympus, people turned to him for instructions. While his tactics can be somewhat erratic (he gets strategy help) he leads from the front and sets the example by being brave in the face of danger. His bravery takes him to the point that he would prefer to put his own life in danger rather than risking anyone he cares about, strangers and even the occasional enemy. In the end, even when Luke betrayed them all, he still reached out to save him, believing in the good in him. During Mark of Athena Percy noted that he had a hard time letting someone else lead because he wanted to do everything himself to protect everyone. He begun to accept that he does need help and that he wasn't always the best man for the job. This became very clear in th House of Hades, when Percy had to rely on Annabeth and her knowledge when he got bogged down in his fears.
Even though Percy occasionally displayed an arrogant belief that he was the better person for the job, he is humble and fair at heart. He firmly believed in doing the right thing and did not want rewards for doing so. This included titles such as 'Lord' which the Pegasus accord him and ddin't like to be set above other people because of who he was or what he has done. When Percy saved Olympus, not only did Percy turn down the highest honour the gods could give him - immortality, he demanded that the gods claim all their children so they would not be abandoned and in trouble away from the support of Camp Halfblood. He never goes back on his his word if he can help it and he expects even gods to do the same. When people fall short of the standards he expects from them he can get very short tempered.
Percy is somewhat short-tempered, and can have trouble controlling his anger sometimes. As mentioned he got angry when people fall short of his standards, and he has a big problem with bullying. He feels a need to defend the little guy, no matter how unpopular they are. First with Grover and then with his brother Tyson. It made him unpopular at normal schools among the kids.
Percy's temper displayed in quick sharp burst like a giant tidal wave. He's generally very laid back, adapting and changing like the flow of water. He had a sarcastic sense of humour that often got him into trouble. Anyone is fair game for Percy to direct his sarcasm tot, even the gods. It had won him a few enemies. Ares referred to him as a ‘punk’ and even though, PErcy has helped the gods many times, he still held a grudge against him.
In a normal setting, Percy's personality comes across differently. He suffers from ADHD and dyslexia which made it difficult for him to concentrate on school. Consequently, he is labelled unruly and a trouble maker and kicked out of a number of schools. Percy isn’t exactly dumb, but he sometimes comes off that way. Percy has an okay general knowledge, but his smarts are in battles. In the demi0god world, he is far behind on his understanding of the gods and the monsters they face compared to people like Annabeth who have been brought up with the knowledge.
When information is lorded over him, or used to make him comply with another’s wishes Percy doesn't respond. He does not like to be forced or moulded to suit someone else. As Poseidon told him, he is like the sea, changeable and doesn’t like to be contained.
Like all heroes Percy has a 'fatal flaw', something that could lead to their downfall if it goes unchecked and ignored. Percy’s was pointed out by Athena and it is his own excessive personal loyalty. He would risk the world, not to mention his own life, to save a loved one. This could end disastrously for all but Percy remains stubborn. He does not see personal loyalty as a bad thing despite clear cases of it having being used against him previously by Kronos and Athena stated “the most dangerous flaws are good in moderation.”
The person in question he was trying to save at the time was Annabeth, the girl in his life. Percy is kind of pants with girls and fails to see when they are attracted to him. Often leading to confusion on his point and disappointment and anger of the girls. It was Annabeth who made the advances, and it is clear who much Percy feels for her. When he lost his memories, he still retained his feelings for her.
Percy is loyal to the end, and meets every challenge in his life sarcasm and humour.
Percy’s character remains consistent throughout the Son of Neptune even when he loses his memories, and Mark of Athena. His consistency makes people trust him and Hera remarked that Percy would be the glue that would hold the Roman and Greek sides together.
Character's skills/abilities/powers:
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: n
One pen: Uncapped this transforms into a sword
Abilities from Poisedon: Percy has a natural affinity with water and can control it. It makes him stronger and heal him. He’s weaker out of water.
Also at extreme cost to himself he can cause earthquakes
He also speaks to horses
Are you bringing your character to
ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: n/a
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Percy’s whole life has been ruled by the gods. I want to see what it would be like when he can choose for himself. Also blue food might be a thing in space.
Writing Sample #1:
Percy stares at the stares through the window. “Hello stars, from Bob.” His voice is steady but he cracks inside. Bob would never see the sun, or even a handful of stars, Tartarus would never let him go. He was probably dead by now and there was nothing Percy could do about it.
He has to defeat Gaia to make Bob’s sacrifices worth something.
He didn’t deserve this, he should have stayed and insisted Bob went to see the sun and stars and protect Annabeth.
At least Bob would be there with her right now, while Percy is in space.
Okay. Space is kind of cool. Part of Percy’s brain is occupied with how far up Olympus is from this and if they wear space suits. He can’t picture how Zeus’ beard would fit in space suit. Can it handle an electric shock?
He puts his hand in his pocket. At least he still has his sword. He’ll work out what is going on eventually and he will find a way home. He’s got people counting on him and he won’t let them down.
Once he works out what is going on, he;ll help people here too. If he can. There isn’t much water is space but he’ll do his best. That’s what he does.
He’s tired.
Mayby someday he will get to rest.
